In the day, energy produced by the panels is used to provide for the total power consumption of the household. If extra energy is produced by the panels, then it gets stored in the battery (no export to the EB hence the term off grid). During the night, since the panels won't be producing energy, the power stored in the battery will be used.
In case of a power cut, the battery will provide the power that it stored in the nights, and get recharged in the morning. However, the battery size must be chosen carefully with this in mind. This is a truly self-sufficient system that maintains autonomy from EB. The caveat would be the limit to the amount of power it stores.
